Free Family Activities, This Weekend

Published: 18th August 2016

The weekend is nearly upon us and we’ve rounded up the top 5 fun and FREE family activities, for your enjoyment…

Olympic Fever!

Olympic fever is here and if you’re getting into the swing of things, why not revisit the site of the 2000 Games? To celebrate the 2016 Rio Games, the Olympic cauldron will be re-lit on Saturday from 4pm-8pm. You can also go on a Clue Trail to discover Games anecdotes and facts, or watch highlights from Rio on the big screen!

To Market, To Market…

Markets are a great family friendly activity – the kids can run around, Dad can eat and mum can shop; perfect! The Rocks, Paddington, Rozelle, Bondi, Eveleigh and Manly all host weekly markets where you can shop for clothes, art, gifts, jewelry, flowers, fruit and veg and delicious food. What’s not to love?

(Barangaroo Sculpture) + FREE Cupcakes!

To celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of Barangaroo Reserve, the new Harbour foreshore park is hosting its own outdoor exhibition in partnership with the much-loved Sculpture by the Sea. The exhibition is free and there are 14 artworks to enjoy. Sunday marks the official first birthday so there’ll be a variety of entertainment to enjoy including performances and 3,000 free cupcakes.

Cultural Experiences

The Art Gallery of NSW, Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rocks Discovery Museum and the National Maritime Museum all (surprisingly) offer free entry to at least some of their exhibitions so there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy some culture this weekend. Depending on your preference you can learn about Australia’s relationship with the sea, art from both Australia and different cultures, Aboriginal history and the lives of early settlers in Sydney.

Cherry Blossoms

The Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off this weekend in the beautiful Auburn Botanic Gardens, amongst the flowering Cherry Blossoms. The festival will be bursting with Japanese culture, food, music performances and martial arts, so there’s something for everyone. Festival goers are encouraged to partake in the ancient tradition of Hanami, picnicking around the blossoms with family and friends. The weather forecast looks promising for the weekend, so this sounds like a great family day out!

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you enjoy the sunshine and create some amazing memories with your loved ones.
